heard from a bird that the film group is getting someone from Quickdraw to set up the stand. yessss. going to shoot on 35mm, we'll see what happens.

i'm at videopool. got a 1/4 done but still a lot to go. the seance shoot at doreen's tomorrow night will probably be postponed. story of my life. everyone is drinking beer downstairs so i will have to join them. had a few already and i think i agreed to another music video that i will never finish.

just got back from the images festival in toronto. it was great. lots of high level work to inspire even the most jaded of us. from mind melting digital video to emotionally crafted films, really a fantastic experience. highlights of the trip:

got a tour of their new space and all their equipment. lots of equipment. 3 animation stands! i lost my marbles. met ben donahue and discussed custom workshops. a totally accessible space which caught me off guard. i'm putting my pennies away to go back very soon. and eventually for good.

so now i'm back home, and i can't stop thinking about all that film equipment at lift. that 1/2 hour tour has already changed the trajectory of my aimless future. a large chunk of my life has been spent reminiscing an idealized past (CHILDHOOD), and not really thinking of future plans due to my gloomy disposition. the "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" has usually been a great source of anxiety for me. which explains my problems with saving money. but now i can say, i'd like to be completely technically self-sufficient in analog animation film techniques including special effects, which means, i will have to have money (not a lot), but enough to force me to cut out my nonchalant spending habits that would normally be characteristic of someone with a way higher income, as well as binge drinking that mostly comes from boredom/depression. basically, it's time to grow up.

the animated hmpl will be opening up brett's program on friday night. jeff krulik and john heyn, the directors of the original HMPL have been super supportive of the animation, and have sent encouraging notes easing the nervousness i am feeling. they are good people.

my mom and my sister are going, and i'm super excited to spend some time with them. my mom has 2 jobs, and works too much to make time for anything fun. hopefully the trip will be good for her.

for months i've dreamed about staring my own ebay or etsy store to sell my stockpile of old crap. after realizing how much work that would require i decided to just leave most of it in the alley. clint and i finally did a giant clean (his parents are in town). there was a piece of bread or cracker on the ground that must have fallen out of one of our mouths or clint's beard several weeks ago, that neither of us bothered to clean up. we admitted to each other that on seperate occassions we have seen it on the ground, and left it there. time to make a chore wheel i think.

last night we saw a documentary on ronnie lane from the small faces at the cyrk. what a neat little place. an intimate cinema in a house on young street. since i'm not much into big crowds or bright lights, i felt at home. lots of music nerds in attendance. ronnie lane's story reminded me a lot of jack smith's story. a guy who stuck to his guns, and ended up really poor. but then again, if you start with nothing what have you got to lose

i will have a card in the above trading event, vancouver bc. had an interview with The Straight, though we mostly talked about Garbage Pail Kids cards so i don't know if it really went well. i guess we'll see. ANIMATRON took place last month at lms, wish i could have been there for that too. will have to wait to see the other works on DVD. also won't be in sf for sf indie fest--too much trouble and too costly to be worth it. though i was honestly looking forward to the big lebowski party...it just wasn't meant to be.

over the weekend, clint and i were discussing huxley's last moments, and how he requested LSD on his death bed. how valuable is an experience that cannot be shared or recounted?

it's a nice thought though, that there is something beyond the grave.

best moments of 2008: talking with newman over beers about beer, class + art, and winnipeg. learning printmaking from patrick neufeld, and making a new friend. meeting ryan simmons. a lone wolf makes the best of friends. and every trip to thristy's flea market. oh, and seeing Bruce Bickford's animation THE COMIC THAT FRENCHES YOUR MIND. wait, that was this year. the best thing i have ever seen. see a short clip brucebickford.com/media/BruceLineWebQuick.mov. i hope someday i can be that free.

the mirror never lies!!!

watched Died Young, Stayed Pretty a few nights ago. it was nice to see and hear glimpes of brian chippandale's thoughts about the world around him (though he did get more screentime than the other artists) i've always liked his printed matter more than his animations, but i should definitely revist them. he's so bright and seemingly down to earth. it's almost hard to believe there are people like him still in a world so full of bs and mean people. you can't help but rethink why you do what you are doing and who you are doing it for after listening to him speak.

one of my shorts, The Animated Heavy Metal Parking Lot, is playing SF Indie this year! I will be going to San Francisco in February to the festival, and will check out all the street art and galleries i've always wanted to visit. have any of you been to SF, and know any good places to stay that are relatively cheap and safe? i only know one person in SF and still don't know if i can stay with him so, any suggestions would be helpful. thanks!

i made this video for a contest put on by asthmatic kitty. it's repetitive and i've gotten mixed reviews. lesson learned: don't try to animate in one day. that's ok. i did it for the money!!! there is a cash prize, and there are some really great ones. clint did the editing half cut. i don't know how he does it. what a crazy night. never again!

i've been really good lately at not buying more than i need from thrift stores. i have a tendency to go ape shit over things that cost under $3. something acquired in the old days when my lolo (grandpa) would take me and my siblings to countless garage sales on the weekend to get toys. i wish i had a picture of how many stuffed panda bears we had. my brother and i were very keen on saving all of them from the dump. we knew the garage sale was one step away from the dump. plus "garage" is one letter away from "garbage" anyway i stopped by the goodwill and found this sweater. i had to save it!

sending this to anonymous drawings. i really like the concept of this whole thing. though i haven't been drawing much. thinking a lot lately about making moving images more and drawings coming as a consequence of them.

the super 8 animation had some fuzzy spots, so i have to re-shoot. don't know if i should wait for the oxberry to get set up at the film group or just go with video. leaning more with the video option.

what a crazy weekend! aaron came to visit from vancouver, and had a swell time at the antique shops. finally met kenny roux. there was even a dance party (send + receive) afterwards. though it was short lived, and took forever to start, aaron got a chance to show off his fancy footwork. though some winnipeg artists who i won't name sitting in a dark corner thought it would be time well spent poking fun at us, nothing beats watching aaron and kenny shake it on the dance floor.

thinking about doomsday a lot. not so much the economic one, but the all encompassing one. this show was one of my favorites in a long time, really funny stuff.

also got to visit robert pasternak again at his studio. if you ever meet this man, please ask him for a studio tour. he also does In Plain View sometimes. his studio is wonder of psychedelics and comics and novelty items and spacey everything like when you were a kid, but better because you are old now and can't remember anything being this great. plus, he's the sweetest person.

i finally paid off my whopping $35 late fee at the public library. i can now take out more books to return late. i took out a few books on animation, with some how-to's on constructing an efficient paper-cut out puppet, and tips on building a stand.

in the past my cut-outs were jointless. i was trying to figure out a way to put the pieces together, and i never thought about doing it with string. i'm shooting on Super 8, so we'll see how they'll turn out. they are so fun to move now.

since i had my camera out, i took a few more pics. these ladies are my favorite. made by a Phyllis Smith in St. James. most likely deceased.

laura and i spent her last day in winnipeg doing some speed printing. we were a bit pressed for time due to some unforeseen exposure errors. but we made it! despite head colds and exhaustion, and realizations that we both hated printmaking, we finished and made a trade. i'm ready to make some mail trades for laura's wonderful winnipeg drawing. it will have something to do with lots of cupcakes and gold ink.

Today was a great day for trades. Received something in the mail. That, thankfully, wasn't bent, from Aaron. Met up with Garland this afternoon.

I spent the afternoon hanging out with Nicole (hopefully I didn't bore her too much!) drawing at Plug-In, surrounded by Annie Pootoogook's wonderful drawings. It was nice to spend the afternoon not at work and just drawing with other girls. I didn't feel rushed to do anything, like I usually do during weekdays. I walked around the city really slow on my way home, catching myself smiling. Just smiling and walking. When was the last time that happened? For some reason I thought Annie was going to be at the drawing workshop. Did I read that she was going to be in town ,or did I jump the gun? Oh well. It was still a great time.

In the spirit of Annie, I made this. That is my brother, my sister, me, and my dog on my sister's lap. McDonald's and Safeway stuff, lots of that as a kid. Working with pencil crayon is tough. She makes it look so easy. I think I'm giving this to "License Boy" George Chartrand this weekend at the Mainfesto '08. I bought some drawings from him a couple of weekends ago at Thirsty's on Ellice. He's the best. He told me he also does stand-up, which I can't wait to see.

made some neon spandex balaclavas for sandee's dance shoot today. poorly made balaclavas are quite easy to sew together. i'm drinking Lucky and practicing my moves. i'm sweating and terribly out of shape. i wonder how long it's been since i could touch my toes? maybe it's time to finally get that Y membership, or something. who am i kidding.

there will be an art show at the speakeasy sometime at the end of august. and candice of the now broken up Sea Wizard is having one in her apartment too. should be fun. but after that, it's all cartoons all the time! or else i'm toast! no more goofing around.

jonah came by last night to pick up the posters. hung out, ate pizza and went on a slurpee run with clint. he's the sweetest guy. he's moving away to MTL next summer, along with everyone else it seems. i'll find out on the 28th if i'll be going to MTL for 3 months in the fall--i have my fingers crossed.
